UCSB Report to JOG/CPG – May 21-22, 2002:

JOG:

The Information Technology Planning Group (ITPG) conveyed twenty items to the Information Technology Board (ITB) for consideration. The ITB discussed the items and used the CommunityPoll web survey service to rank proposals as having, “High”, “Medium” or “Low” priority.Eight of the proposals were ranked “High” in priority by more than half of the 20 ITB members participating. The high priority rankings validated ITPB recommendations to enhance campus networking (intra-building wiring, wide area connectivity, and campus backbone), implement software infrastructure (directory, authorization and software licensing) and evaluate course development, management and delivery systems. The results of the ITB polling also added support for extending open access hours in the Library. The next step is for the Director of the Office of Information Technology to present the results, in context with other information gathered throughout the year, to the Executive Vice Chancellor.

The Office of Information Technology has launched a survey of faculty to assess the level of interest in course management and delivery systems.  The results of the survey will be input to a new faculty committee that is being formed to address planning in this area.

Integration testing of the Billing, Accounts Receivable & Cashiering (BARC) system continues.  We are now completing the last few interface routines, adding security codes and performing quality assurance testing.  A new platform including W2K, Websphere 4.0, IIS, Jconnect 4.5 and Sybase 12.5 (on W2K) supports the testing. A successful demonstration of the new system was presented to a meeting of billing and accounts receivable staff from around the UC system.  Production is slated for October of this year.

New Transfer of Funds and Transfer of Expense systems are being constructed using common Java methods supported by infrastructure developed for the BARC project.

IS&C replaced several Novell servers with Windows 2000 servers in the Institutional Advancement division.  The conversion included the migration of 150 users to a new file server and the replacement of IPX networking with IP.  IS&C is also providing workstation, email and calendaring support for about 150 customers in Institutional Advancement.

IS&C continues to encourage the adoption of Host-on-Demand (HOD), an IBM product that serves 3270 emulation from a browser window.  An important feature of HOD is the encryption of data transfers between the browser and the host.  We are currently running HOD 6.0.  (HOD 7 is already in beta.)

Payroll leave data and permanent budget data are being added to the Data Warehouse.

IS&C successfully interfaced the Library’s new Aleph system to BARC.
