UCSB Report to JOG/CPG
- May 4-5, 2000:
-
New Billing, Accounts Receivable & Cashiering System (BARC) has been
delayed due to both infrastructure and application testing issues.
New target date is early June. Stress testing is in progress.
The code is developed on PC desktops, integrated on an NT platform and
then promoted to AIX.
-
The Travel Voucher System, now integrated with accounts payable and general
ledger, is in production for a pilot group of departments..
-
LDAP is up and running with email addresses from the campus email providers
merged with the faculty and staff entries from UCDir. LDAP supports
authentication for the calendar/scheduling server and the proxy server.
The LDAP directory is also available via a WAP-enabled telephone link.
-
We have a pilot group running thin clients on the Microsoft Terminal Server.
The response continues to be positive as we test all of the possible software
we might want to run in this mode. We plan to market this service
to the campus beginning in July.
-
An update to the Computer Center's Disaster Recovery Plan is about to be
circulated to customers.
-
Implementation of the new Office
of Information Technology continues. Searches for a 1/2 time
faculty director and a full time professional associate director are in
progress. Communications Services and the Campus Network Programmers
will be transferred to the new office by July 1. A transition team
has constructed a mission statement and a list of services the new unit
will provide.
-
We are installing a new Remote Access System (Cisco 5300) to replace all
of our public modems and terminal servers. We plan to support 16
connections with a two hour time limit and 112 connections with a 30 minute
time limit. All connections will support rates up to 56 Kbps.
-
UCSB Cable Modem Service is being installed in the two student housing
units that have not yet been wired for direct Ethernet attachment.
The announcement
to residents is posted on the Communications Services home page.
The cable modems will be operated as a UCSB network service rather than
operated by the local cable television provider.
-
We are negotiating with Cox Communications for a discount on cable modem
service to faculty, staff and student residences with an option of having
the monthly fees billed to a University account number rather than the
resident's home cable bill.
-
The on-campus portion of the CalREN-2 network was completed and the implementation
group disbanded on April 25.
-
We have started installing additional single-mode fiber optic cable to
support the Next Generation Backbone initiative. The new network
will eventually replace the existing FDDI and CalREN-2 network using gigabit
Ethernet switches. An RFQ for equipment is in progress.
