UCSB Report to JOG/CPG
- January 25-26, 2000:
-
New Billing, Accounts Receivable & Cashiering System (BARC) is currently
scheduled for production on March 6. We are converting data, testing and
creating training materials. We plan to start with a dedicated four-
processor RS/6000 R50 for the application server and web server with Sybase
running on another machine. The rollout will start with office staff
and continue with student self-service in the spring.
-
Travel Voucher System, now integrated with accounts payable and general
ledger, is scheduled to go to the pilot group on February 4 for domestic
travel only.
-
Admissions System has required support of three developers since September.
We are now working on decision logic, candidate filters and statistical
reports.
-
The campus space digitization project has slowed due to difficulties with
data quality control. Another vendor has been hired to audit the
project and make recommendations.
-
LDAP project team is now merging e-mail addresses from the campus e-mail
providers into a unified list that will be merged with the faculty and
staff entries from UCDir that are currently in the LDAP.
-
We have a pilot group running thin clients on the Microsoft Terminal Server.
The response has been enthusiastic. This service might be marketable.
-
A group of technicians on campus formed a "Wireless Scouting Party"
to survey the state of wireless offerings and report back to the Information
Technology Planning Group.
-
We have backed off of 24x7 facility operation with little or no objection
from the customers.
-
The Computer Center signed a contract with El Camino Resources to provide
hardware in the event of a disaster. For $300 per month El Camino
promises to ship a functional set of hardware to us within five days of
a loss. This will be the foundation for our updated Disaster Recovery
Plan.
-
The administration has funded high priority projects including: Intrabuilding
Wiring ($1.8M one-time), One additional FTE for network security, Next
Generation Backbone Network - Phase I ($250K/yr permanent) and students
in the LDAP directory.
-
The new Office of Information Technology has also been funded. Searches
for a 1/2 time faculty director and a full time professional "deputy director"
will begin soon. Communications Services and the Campus Network Programmers
will be transferred to the new office, hopefully by July 1. A transition
team will be formed shortly.
-
Communications Services' Billing, Order and Repair Information System (BORIS)
has gone live for both students and business offices. Customers can
review detail call records on previous bills and project their upcoming
bills. Individual call records are available within minutes of placing
a call.
-
UCSB Cable Modem Service is being installed in the two student housing
units that have not yet been wired for direct Ethernet attachment.
