Santa Barbara Campus Sept 2003

OIT/Campus contributions to ITLC report

--A security study directed at a unification of network, server and remote access strategies is underway.

--The campus Directory architecture is being revised in the interests of higher availability and increased security.

--The Oblix middleware suite was selected at the completion of a two year study and subsequent RFQ. Implementation is now underway.

--Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) implementation is ongoing as a replacement for the aging ADSM system. SAN and LTO-2 technologies are among our new components in this traditional function.

--UCSB experienced its first SB1386 incident.  The campus is currently working through the process of assessment and notification.

--The new Billing Accounts Receivable/Cashier system is now operational.  The rapid implementation approach adopted at the beginning of this project proved highly successful.  If that was humorous to you, you?ve probably been hearing these campus reports longer than you care to admit.

--The IS&C Unix and Office Systems Group (UOSG) Email server RFI process has been completed. They are evaluating the top 2 products: Sendmail's SAMS product and Stalker's Communigate Pro.

--Jamie Sonsini, the manager of UOSG, met at Oracle World with 3 other UC campus representatives (UCI, UCB, UCSC) to discuss the future course of corporate calendaring.  It looks like all 4 campuses are planning to run the Oracle Calendar product (aka "CorporateTime") in "stand alone" mode for the foreseeable future.

--IS&C is expanding the Thin Client service by adding one more server to the constellation to accommodate additional growth in the Thin Client device area and in our application hosting.

--IS&C Work station support is researching solutions to the problems associated with providing security for supported workstations in light of the recent onslaught of attacks.

--IS&C is looking into two competing strategies for IBM mainframe maintenance.  One is a fully contracted outsource such as Trident, and the other is a variable time independent contractor.

--IS&C is also looking into z/OS migration options. One would be zELC type licensing of the full z/OS product on a z800 type platform. The other would be the z/OSe version of the OS that restricts the nature and composition of the software workload, but is highly price competitive.

--The Graduate Division is n ow accepting credit card payments for the application fee.  It is expected that credit cards will be accepted as payments for other fees, such as petition fees, etc., in the near future.

--The Graduate Division has begun implementing online decision notification for admissions.

--Student Affairs Pre-Admit web site. This site provides a single sign-on ?portal? for UCSB applicants to check the status of their application, and makes available Housing, Financial Aid and Student Health information within a single log in session. This site is integrated with the above Financial Aid site, and uses the same technologies.  Planned upgrades in progress include on-line Student Intent To Register (SIR) form submission with credit card payment for Fall '04 admits.

--Student Affairs - Electronic Grades Submission project.  A web based application is being developed using MS .Net development framework, and is targeted for release in Spring '04.  This application is integrated with UCSB?s mainframe based Registration and Curriculum Systems.  It will give faculty, teaching assistants and staff the ability to view courses to be graded, enter grades, approve and submit grades, and track grade submission by course, faculty, academic department, and college, with utilities and tools for these various users to manage and track the grading process.

--UCSB Student Exchange Visitor Information System - SEVIS ? The UCSB integrated system includes:

  • FSAAtlas vendor application, with data interfaces from UCSB?s Admissions and Registration Systems and Graduate Division applications
  • UCSB custom self-service web/workflow application for use by UCSB sponsoring departments, foreign students and scholars, and the Office of International Students and Scholars. Foreign visitor data is then transmitted to the government agencies that provide the Visa documents.
