What does it mean?

The Information Systems function within the Information Systems and Computing department performs professional business applications development and applications support services for the campus. Normally, these services are for core business systems used by the central administrative offices. Some of the major services include project management such as breaking projects into smaller tasks and preparation of estimates, business systems analysis such as needs assessment and identification/evaluation of alternate solutions, automated information systems application development including systems design, database design, program coding and testing, and implementation tasks including quality assurance, system and program documentation and initial customer training.

We also provide support to our customer base for the applications we have developed. Some of our support services include problem analysis, error recovery, data recovery, assistance and training to run systems and associated jobs, and trouble shooting/assistance with operational questions, problems, and emergencies.

Who are the clients?

Administrative Managers across the campus are our primary clients. We do a small number of projects for clients in the community.
Inside the Administrative Services Division
We work very closely with other departments in the division on administrative applications that are needed by the campus community. For example, we work very closely with Accounting, Facilities Management, Purchasing, BA/RC, Personnel, and Environmental Health and Safety to develop and/or consult on institutional and divisional administrative information systems.

Outside the Administrative Services Division
We work with the departmental programmers and functional staff in the Office of Academic Personnel, the College of Letters and Science, the Library, Budget and Planning, Instructional Research, and most Student Affairs departments (with an especially close relationship to Student Information Systems) to consult and develop institutional information systems.

Who at IS&C is involved?

Applications development intersects with every other unit within IS&C. The Systems Group provides the hardware and software platform upon which we build the systems, Operations maintains and operates the hardware, The UNIX and Office Systems Group provides support to our customers for configuration of the devices upon which they run their systems, and the administrative unit processes our customer billing. The UNIX and Office Systems Group manages our departmental LAN, Divisional File Server, CorporateTime, and electronic mail system. We also use cross- functional teams to perform research and development on emerging technologies.
